4711 Original Eau de Cologne began production in 1792 in Cologne on 4711 Carillon Street by Wilhelm Muelhens. He received the recipe from a Carthusian monk as a wedding gift, and it was said to be the recipe for "aqua mirabilis," miracle water that could be used both internally and externally. He started the production, and it became a great success, with even the stars of the time, such as Goethe and Richard Wagner, using it faithfully. The recipe remains a secret, but it is made with essential oils for their aromatherapeutic properties. Initially, it was used both externally and internally.
