4711 Soap

Product information

4711 Original Eau de Cologne began production in 1792 in Cologne on 4711 Carillon Street by Wilhelm Muelhens. He received the recipe from a Carthusian monk as a wedding gift, and it was said to be the recipe for "aqua mirabilis," miracle water that could be used both internally and externally. He started the production, and it became a great success, with even the stars of the time, such as Goethe and Richard Wagner, using it faithfully.

The recipe remains a secret, but it is made with essential oils for their aromatherapeutic properties. Initially, it was used both externally and internally. In 1810, Napoleon decreed that all secret recipes for internal use should be made public, so Wilhelm Muelhens decided it would only be sold for external use.
